At a final table, the moment you become OOP against a stack that covers you, tournament survival value comes before pot equity. This article explains why you should check almost always, and how to decide between folding and jamming based on board texture.
Imagine a final table with 8 players remaining. The average stack is 25bb, Hero has 30bb in the CO, and the BTN chip leader has 63bb, fully covering Hero. Hero opens and BTN calls. In this spot, Hero's risk premium rises to about 18.1%.
The meaning of this number is simple. Even in the same chip EV situation, the cost of Hero losing a big pot is far greater than the reward of winning it. So the key in this spot is not “how well can I protect my equity on the flop,” but “how well can I protect the fact that my 30bb stack is my tournament lifeline.”
The CO opening range becomes more cautious than it would be when covering the BTN. That is because the chip leader can call in position. As a result, CO prefers hands with blocker value, such as A-x and K-x, while BTN can call fairly wide with broadways, pocket pairs, suited A-x, and suited connectors thanks to position and stack pressure.
The problem starts after the flop. If Hero bets first, the pot grows, and BTN can apply pressure in position by raising or calling. Hero has to keep acting first on the turn and river, while BTN can make a large bet at any point that threatens Hero's tournament survival.
So CO's priorities are usually ordered like this.

A board like A-T-T looks very good for CO. CO opens many A-x hands, while BTN's suited-connector-type hands mostly miss. Even so, there is a reason CO cannot comfortably bet.
The hands CO truly wants to stack off with are generally very strong hands, usually T-x or better. Top pairs like AK or AQ may have equity, but they struggle to withstand two more streets in a big pot. Especially when holding T-x, Hero blocks the opponent's T-x combos, so betting may block bluffs more than it gets called by weaker hands.
On static boards, BTN can attack CO's weak checking range widely with a small size. For example, facing a 25% pot bet on A-T-T rainbow, CO should not easily fold top pair. A small bet does not immediately threaten tournament life, and this is a zone where the opponent may be stabbing too wide.
By contrast, if BTN bets large, such as 65-70% pot, the story changes. CO's top pair with a weak kicker is no longer a “strong hand,” but a “medium hand that struggles to handle a big pot.” If you simply follow standard MDF calculations, you will defend too much.
On dynamic boards, both folds and jams increase. On boards like T-8-6 two-tone or 7-2-2 rainbow, where equity can shift dramatically depending on the turn card or BTN's positional advantage becomes more powerful, calling becomes the most uncomfortable option.
Hands like JJ, QQ, and A-T are likely ahead right now, but if an overcard, flush card, or straight-connecting card falls on the turn, the hand becomes sharply harder to play. If Hero only calls with these hands, Hero has to carry a large pot OOP and make two more decisions.
Jamming may look like an action designed to grow the pot, but its real purpose is different. It cuts off the opponent's equity immediately and removes unfavorable positional decisions on the turn and river.

The purpose of jamming is not only value, but also equity denial and removal of OOP risk
In cash games or chip EV-centered situations, MDF is a useful reference point. But under final-table ICM, what matters more than the defense frequency itself is what future opens up after you defend.
For example, when facing a 70% pot bet, it may theoretically look like you need to defend quite a few hands. But if Hero defends, then faces another large bet on the turn and all-in pressure on the river, simple pot odds are not enough of an explanation. BTN has position, the covering stack, and ICM pressure all at once.
First, do not make flop leading or c-betting your default. If you c-bet just because the board feels good, BTN gets to play a much easier game from the turn onward.
Second, treat small bets and big bets differently. Against small bets, you can defend wider and mix in some raises, but against large bets, you need to become much stricter by ICM standards.
Third, distinguish between strong made hands and strong but vulnerable hands. With hands like sets or trips that can induce opponent bluffs, calling may be natural. By contrast, overpairs, strong top pairs, and vulnerable two-pair-type hands may be better off reaching an immediate conclusion by jamming.
If CO opens and the BTN chip leader calls, Hero has already entered one of the most uncomfortable configurations at the final table. The goal here is not to find a fancy c-bet line. The goal is to keep dangerous pots small and continue clearly only when you must.
Checking is not a sign of weakness. In this situation, checking is the center of the strategy. Folding is the choice that protects survival, and jamming is the choice that removes unfavorable future decisions. At a final table with heavy ICM pressure, these two choices protect far more money than awkward calls.
