Even when everyone has the same stack, like on the first hand of a 200-player MTT, ICM already changes postflop decisions. On low rainbow boards in particular, OOP should reduce medium-sized betting and shift toward checking and smaller bets.
Many players treat the early stages of an MTT almost like a cash game. No one has been eliminated yet, everyone started with 100bb, and the bubble is still far away. But even on the very first hand of a regular 200-player MTT, the ICM risk premium is not zero.
The difference may not look huge. Across all flops, it may appear to be only a few percentage points of frequency change. But once you break things down by board texture, the strategy separates quite clearly. In a 100bb single-raised pot where UTG opens and BTN calls, low rainbow boards in particular show a large gap between Chip EV and ICM.
The most important change in an ICM environment is the downward shift in bet sizing. Spots that mix 50% pot, 66% pot, and small sizes in Chip EV become more cautious under ICM.
Medium sizes are awkward. They grow the pot without pushing the opponent out often enough, and when called, they create more ICM pressure on the turn and river. That is why ICM often creates the following pattern.
Signals that C-bet sizing should move down under ICM
ICM does not always demand only small bets. In some highly polarized situations, large bets or overbets can actually increase in frequency. The reason is simple. If taking a medium-sized line only increases risk, then either controlling the pot cheaply or applying strong pressure becomes better.
In practice, this pattern is easy to remember as “min or all-in.” Under ICM, the middle ground becomes a more expensive option than many players expect.
100bb, UTG opens, BTN calls. In this setup, UTG has the stronger preflop range but is out of position. In Chip EV, UTG can use a fairly balanced C-betting strategy across many boards. Overall, checking is near 50%, with multiple bet sizes mixed in.
When you switch to ICM, checking increases, and when UTG does bet, the preference for small sizing becomes stronger. Medium bets in particular lose space. In PKOs, by contrast, large bets and overbets appear more often because bounties create a stronger incentive to attack stacks rather than preserve chips.

Contrary to intuition, under ICM, BTN may not fold more often to UTG's small 25% pot C-bet. Because UTG has already chosen to check so often, the range that actually bets becomes clearer and stronger. BTN is getting a small price and has position, so rather than simply folding, BTN tries to realize equity by calling.
However, when BTN fights back, the frequency of large raises can increase relative to medium raises. The same logic appears here as well. Under ICM, lines that either continue cheaply or apply strong pressure survive more often than lines that grow the pot in an in-between way.
ICM lowers the equity realization of both players. Even though it looks like two players are fighting over a pot, tournament chips are not linear in value, so some EV leaks out to the rest of the field.
If UTG's average EV is normalized by the pot, UTG captures about 53.8% in Chip EV but drops to about 49.9% under ICM. Equity realization also falls: UTG goes from 96% to 89.7%, while BTN drops from 104.7% to 99.1%. Both players lose, but UTG, being OOP, takes the bigger hit.
On ace-high boards, UTG's range advantage is clear, so the difference between Chip EV and ICM is relatively small. By contrast, on unpaired rainbow boards 9-high or lower, both players can connect in many ways, and UTG must manage a larger pot without position.
For example, across all 9-high unpaired rainbow boards, the Chip EV check rate is about 51%, but the ICM check rate can rise to about 80%. On the single board 952 rainbow, UTG bets about 68% in Chip EV, but only about 34% under ICM.
Being aware of ICM even at 100bb early in a tournament does not mean playing scared. It means reducing the habit of applying automatic pressure with medium sizes and assigning more value to checking based on board and position.
Questions UTG should check on the flop against BTN
ICM in regular MTTs usually leans toward chip preservation. But in PKOs, bounties create a major incentive. If you can pressure and eliminate an opponent's stack, the value of large bets and overbets rises.
So even in the early stage of the same 200-player tournament, UTG may check less often and use large sizes more often in a PKO. If you apply the “downward drift” learned from regular MTTs directly to PKOs, you become too passive.
ICM is not a switch that suddenly turns on near the bubble. It is already operating in small ways from the first hand, and on certain boards, the effect is large enough to matter. Especially in spots like UTG vs BTN, where the OOP player has the preflop initiative, you should increase checking frequency on low rainbow boards and consider small sizes more often when you do bet.
Chip EV remains an important baseline. But to win MTTs, you also need to know when to move down from that baseline. The core of ICM postflop is not fear; it is securing more wins before showdown without unnecessarily building big pots.
