Small and frequent on dry boards, large and selective on wet boards. A complete guide to c-bet sizing and frequency by board texture.
The Two Key Variables of a C-Bet
When making a c-bet (continuation bet) on the flop, you need to decide two things: "How often?" and "How big?"
The most important factor determining both variables is board texture.
Strategy by Board Texture
Dry Board: Small, Frequent (25–33%, Frequency 70%+)
Dry Board C-Bet1/2
flopPot 12
Villain checks
Hero bets 4 (33% pot)
AnalysisA♠7♦2♣ = rainbow dry board
Hero (BTN) has both range advantage and nut advantage
Almost no draws — opponent unlikely to improve
Bet small (33%) with a wide range → high frequency
Even air like KJo can bluff — minimal risk
Why bet small?
- Hands that will fold do so regardless of size
- Hands that will call (middle pair, top pair weak kicker) call even bigger bets
- Achieve the same result at a cheaper price
Wet Board: Large, Selective (66–75%, Frequency 50%)
Wet Board C-Bet1/2
flopPot 12
Villain checks
Hero bets 8 (66% pot)
AnalysisJ♥T♥6♠ = wet board (flush draw + straight draw)
Hero: top set (JJJ) — many draws present, protection is needed
Large size denies draws proper pot odds
On boards like this, weak hands (22, 43, etc.) should check back
Why bet large?
- You need to give draws bad pot odds
- Equity denial: if the opponent sees free cards, they can catch up
- Be selective: check back weak hands → bet only nuts/semi-bluffs
Paired Board: Range Bet (25–33%, Frequency 75%+)
Board: 5♠5♦9♣
- Neither range holds many 5x combos
- The PFR (preflop raiser) has a significant range advantage
- Bet small with your entire range
Monotone Board: Proceed with Caution (25–33%, Frequency 50%)
Board: Q♥8♥3♥
- A flush is already possible → BB's range may contain more flushes
- Reduce betting frequency; when you do bet, use a small size
- Even overpairs without a heart (K♠K♦) are bluff-catcher level
