From the concept of pot odds to real-world calculations. Learn how to mathematically determine whether to call or fold with your draws.
Your opponent just bet. Should you call or fold?
If you go by gut feeling, you're guaranteed to lose money in the long run. Pros use a simple math tool called pot odds to make the optimal decision every single time.
Required Equity (%) = Call Amount ÷ (Pot After Bet + Call Amount)
The "pot after bet" already includes your opponent's current bet. So the denominator is (pot before bet + opponent bet + your call).
If this number is less than your hand's equity (probability of winning), call. If it's greater, fold.
| Opponent Bet Size | Minimum Required Equity |
|---|---|
| 25% Pot | 16.7% |
| 33% Pot | 20% |
| 50% Pot | 25% |
| 67% Pot | 28.6% |
| 75% Pot | 30% |
| 100% Pot (pot-sized bet) | 33.3% |
| 150% Pot (overbet) | 37.5% |
| 200% Pot (overbet) | 40% |
"How do I know what my equity is?"
Outs = The number of cards remaining in the deck that can improve your hand to a winner.
Once you count your outs, you can quickly estimate your equity:
- On the flop: Outs × 4 = Approximate equity %
- On the turn: Outs × 2 = Approximate equity %
| Draw Type | Number of Outs | Flop Equity | Turn Equity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flush draw | 9 | ≈36% | ≈18% |
| Open-ended straight draw | 8 | ≈32% | ≈16% |
| Gutshot straight | 4 | ≈16% | ≈8% |
| Two overcards | 6 | ≈24% | ≈12% |
| Flush + open-ended straight (combo draw) | 15 | ≈54% | ≈30% |
Required equity = 8 ÷ (16 + 8 + 8) = 25%
Flush draw: 9 outs × 4 = 36% equity
36% > 25% → Calling is profitable
Your equity (36%) is higher than the required equity (25%), so it's a call.
Required equity = 10 ÷ (14 + 10 + 10) ≈ 29.4%
Gutshot: 4 outs × 4 = 16% equity
16% < 29% → Based on pot odds alone, this is a fold
However, implied odds (future street profits) must be considered
Based purely on pot odds, this is a clear fold. But this is where the concept of implied odds enters the picture.
Even when pot odds fall short, if you can extract additional chips from your opponent when your draw completes, the call can be justified. This is implied odds.
| Situation | Example | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Weak flush draw | 7♠8♠ on K♠2♠5♣ | Complete the flush but lose to A♠x♠ |
| Low-end straight | 5-6 on 7-8-9 board | T-J makes a higher straight |
| Dominated flush draw | J♥9♥ on K♥6♣2♥ | Complete the flush but lose to A♥x♥ |
Calling an opponent's raise with a small pocket pair (22–77), aiming to flop a set.
Call cost: 6 (3bb)
Required stack: 6 × 20 = 120 (60bb+)
Villain stack 100bb → Sufficient → Call
Miss set (88%) → Check/fold
Hit set (12%) → Target a big pot
