At a final table, building the pot against the chip leader is expensive even when you have position. This article explains how to split protection bets and check-backs based on board texture.
Imagine an eight-handed final table. The CO has 35bb and is the second stack, while the SB is the chip leader with 75bb. The CO opens and only the SB calls. The CO has position, but losing one big pot could end their tournament life.
In this spot, the CO’s risk premium against the SB is about 17.8%. By contrast, the SB’s risk premium against the CO is only about 6.6%. In other words, the same 10bb pot feels like it has a different cost for each player.
In a Chip EV environment, the CO can open as wide as about 37% around 30bb. But at a final table, when the chip leader is in the SB, that opening range shrinks to roughly 26%.
The key is not to become blindly tight, but to condense your range around hands that can keep fighting. Broadways, Ax, and strong suited connectors become the core. Ax hands are especially valuable in ICM spots because they block part of the opponent’s strong calling or 3-betting range.
The CO’s flop betting decision comes down to two goals.
First, they need to protect the equity already in the pot. Second, they need to preserve the stack required for tournament survival. That means the best betting candidates are hands that are strong now but can easily be caught on the turn and river.
A monotone A94 board looks good for the CO. The CO has many Ax hands, and their overall equity can be as high as about 56.7%. Yet on this kind of board, it is natural for the CO to bet at a low frequency, only around 37%.
The reason is simple. Hands that are already ahead are not at high risk of being dramatically outdrawn. If the opponent has one diamond, they will not fold often to a small bet. If they do not have a diamond, the CO can still comfortably realize equity on many turn cards. There is no need to grow the pot against the chip leader.
Preflop pot: SB 0.5 + BB 1 + ante 1 + CO 2.2 + SB additional 1.7 = 6.4bb

If Hero bets 25% on the flop, they expose another 1.6bb to risk, and if called, the turn pot becomes 9.6bb
Checking back guarantees equity realization and reduces the burden of the 17.8% risk premium
Even on a low, dry-looking board like 722 rainbow, there are cases where the CO should bet more often. The CO’s Broadway hands may currently be ahead as A-high or K-high, but the SB’s low cards, backdoors, and small pairs can easily catch up on the turn.
On Q73 rainbow, hands like AQ and KK are classic protection-bet candidates. In Chip EV, you might sometimes check to induce, but under ICM, the cost of giving a free card is high. Equity denial matters more than deception.
By contrast, a connected board like 765 rainbow is completely different. This board connects far better with the SB’s calling range, while the CO has fewer strong made hands. In this structure, the CO should almost give up betting even with position. Even top set pays too high an ICM cost if it builds a big pot against open-enders, two pair, and strong combo draws.
If the SB leads for 25% pot, the CO should not automatically raise. Especially in structures where the chip leader can maintain a wide range with a small donk bet, raising unnecessarily grows the pot.
On A94 monotone, when the SB leads small, the CO should mix plenty of calls and folds, while limiting raises mostly to hands that combine strong draws with blockers. On 765 rainbow, if the SB leads, the CO should be even more passive. Since the CO’s range does not connect well with the board, most hands should call or fold. If there are any raise candidates, they are only some hands that combine gutshots with good blockers.
When Facing a Donk Bet From the Chip Leader in the SB
Good position is still powerful. The CO acts last on the turn and river, can control the pot size, and often gets opportunities to check back and reach showdown. But that advantage is not permission to build big pots freely. The moment the chip leader covers you, every additional chip carries a tournament cost that is more expensive than its raw chip value.
