In tournament ICM spots, a BB 3-bet is not just a simple equity battle. This article explains how preflop ranges become polarized, and why that makes flop C-bet strategy different from ChipEV.
When the BB 3-bets against a BTN open in the late stages of a tournament, the spot is different from a normal 3-bet pot. The BB can already see a flop by calling, yet chooses to build the pot OOP. So when ICM pressure is involved, the BB's 3-betting range naturally becomes highly polarized.
Strong hands build the pot for value. Bluff 3-bets, on the other hand, are not as pretty as many players expect. Ace-highs, king-highs, and good suited connectors have plenty of value as calls. The better bluff 3-bet candidates for the BB are often low-card combinations with poor calling value that can create big postflop mistakes.
At first glance, flop C-bet frequencies in ICM simulations can look very different from ChipEV simulations. But if you compare them using the same preflop ranges, the postflop strategies become much more similar.
In other words, the key difference is not that “ICM suddenly makes you play a completely different game on the flop.” ICM changes the preflop 3-betting range, and that changed range pushes the flop strategy in a different direction.
The BB is out of position. Even when the BTN calls a 3-bet, they continue making decisions IP after the flop. Because of this structure, the BTN can call BB 3-bets more easily than against other positions, while the BB has a harder time building the pot with a wide, medium-strength range.
At 50bb, the BB still has some room to maneuver postflop. At 30bb, the BTN's all-in pressure becomes stronger, so the BB must 3-bet more carefully. At 20bb, non-all-in 3-bets become a very limited weapon.
Questions to Ask Before BB 3-Betting
The most intuitive example is an extremely dry board like 2-2-2. In ChipEV, the BB C-bets only about 27% of the time and mildly prefers a 25% pot size. Under ICM, the BB's C-bet frequency rises to about 56%, and that same 25% pot size is used much more strongly.
Why does this happen? Hands like KK, QQ, JJ, AK, and AQ are likely ahead right now. But if the BB checks, the BTN's live cards such as A, K, and Q can fall on the turn and steal the pot away. Under ICM, even this small risk is evaluated more heavily.

In ChipEV, higher range equity generally leads to higher C-bet frequency. Under ICM, that relationship becomes less clear. On some boards, the BB has a decent amount of equity but checks often; on others, the BB does not have overwhelming equity but still uses many small bets.
The reason is the BTN's calling range. After calling a BB 3-bet, the BTN has many A-x, broadway, and suited hands. So boards like A-K-7, K-Q-5, and Js-Ts-4d include strong hands for the BB, but they also connect well with BTN. Betting large on these boards while OOP increases your own ICM risk.
By contrast, low and disconnected boards like 6-3-2 rainbow or 7-4-2 rainbow miss much of the BTN's broadway-heavy calling range. Some of the BB's bluff 3-bet hands can also pick up backdoors or pairs on these boards.
At 50bb, the BB still has room to play postflop. But once ICM applies, value 3-bets tighten, and bluffs shift toward hands with low calling value. Ace-high and king-high suited hands defend well as calls, so there is less reason to spend them as 3-bet bluffs.
Because of this structure, the BB becomes more comfortable C-betting low rainbow boards than high-card boards. BTN's A-x and broadway hands that called the 3-bet miss these boards much more often.
At 30bb, the BTN can respond to a 3-bet by going all-in instead of just calling. If the BB 3-bets too large, the BB loses the option to bluff 3-bet and then fold. That is why at this depth, sizing around 7.5bb is important: it applies pressure while still leaving room to fold against a jam.
At 20bb, BTN opens also become tighter. For example, a structure where BTN opens about 45% at 30bb may shrink to about 37% at 20bb. When BTN's starting range gets stronger, the BB cannot simply widen bluff 3-bets at will.
The reason the BB may 3-bet small to around 6bb here is not just to bluff cheaply. It is to avoid having to call all-in with every 3-bet hand when BTN jams. Under ICM, the structure of “being able to fold to an all-in” has strategic value in itself.
