When a BTN Mississippi straddle is posted in live cash, the preflop structure changes significantly. The BTN has already put in the straddle amount and closes the action against an open raise. In other words, they are calling at a much better price than a standard BTN cold caller.
So when UTG opens and the BTN straddler calls, you should not interpret that pot like a standard two-blind game where the BTN cold calls. The closer comparison is a BB caller. This is not a range that only selected strong hands to call; it is a range that defended wide at a discount.
In BTN straddle pots, the opener can increase c-bet frequency on many boards. The reason is simple. The BTN’s range contains far more hands that completely missed the flop. Hands like Q4o, T5o, and 32s are almost never in a standard BTN cold-calling range, but they can appear at some frequency in a straddle-calling range.
That does not mean you can freely use large sizes. A wider BTN calling range means there are many weak hands, but it also means the BTN has more strange trips and two pair on low-card or paired boards. So the key is not applying heavy pressure with large bets, but realizing your range-wide equity advantage with a small size.

In a standard two-blind game, UTG versus a BTN cold call, this type of board is very uncomfortable for the opener. The BTN has plenty of suited connectors, middle pairs, sets, and strong draws, while UTG has to handle turn changes first from out of position.
But against a BTN straddle caller, the story changes. Yes, the BTN can have 76s, 66, and 33, but they also have far more hands like K4o, J5o, and Q2s that connected with nothing. So instead of checking range, UTG can mix in small c-bets to pressure air.
This board creates many draws and pairs for both players. Some c-betting is possible even in the standard structure, but in a BTN straddle pot the frequency goes up. However, it is hard to make a large size the default because the BTN can have more combinations like 97s, T7s, and 86o.
Broadway boards clearly show UTG’s range advantage. Strong combinations like AA, QQ, JJ, AK, and AQ are dense on the opener’s side, while the BTN straddler’s wide calling range is diluted by many weak hands.
On these boards, you can use a small c-bet very frequently, and some strong value hands and bluffs can consider a larger size. The board is relatively static, so there is also less risk of the structure changing dramatically on the turn.
Low paired boards require the most caution. A standard BTN cold caller does not have many 5x combinations, so a strategy where the opener applies pressure with a large c-bet can make sense.
But the BTN straddler is different. They arrive with far more 5x hands that would be hard to find in a normal cold-calling range, such as A5o, K5s, 65o, and 54s. A wide range usually gives the opener good targets, but on low paired boards it actually increases the BTN’s trips density.
On medium paired boards, the BTN can have some amount of 8x, so a small size is natural. On a high paired board like KK5, UTG still has a strong range advantage, but the BTN straddler may also have defended Kx more widely. Therefore, increasing frequency is fine, but it is usually better not to grow the size too much.
This adjustment is clearest in spots where the range gap is large, such as a UTG min-raise versus a BTN straddle call. By contrast, if CO opens to 3x and BTN calls, the two ranges become closer.
For example, on a 763 two-tone board, CO cannot automatically increase c-bets even against a BTN straddler. CO’s opening range is wider than UTG’s to begin with, so the equity gap against BTN’s defending range is smaller. On the other hand, on boards like AQJ rainbow where the opener’s high-card advantage is clear, the straddle effect still remains.
BTN Straddle Pot C-Bet Checklist
In pots with a BTN Mississippi straddle, the most important question is not “How many strong hands does BTN have?” A better question is “How many hands in BTN’s wide calling range completely missed this flop?”
On most boards, the answer favors the opener. That is why a strategy of c-betting small more often is powerful. However, on textures like low paired boards where BTN’s wide range substantially increases their trips, you need to reduce your use of large sizes.
