Learn the math behind set mining with 22-77, the required stack depth, and how to play postflop when you hit (or miss) your set.
Set mining is the strategy of calling a preflop raise with a small pocket pair (22-77), aiming to flop a set (three of a kind).
For set mining to be profitable, you need an effective stack of at least 15-20 times your call amount.
Pot after call: SB 1 + BB 2 + Villain 6 + Hero 6 = 15
Call cost: 6 (3bb)
15x rule: 6 × 15 = 90 → minimum effective stack of 45bb
20x rule: 6 × 20 = 120 → minimum effective stack of 60bb
Villain stack 100bb → sufficient → call
Miss the set (88%) → check-fold most of the time
Hit the set (12%) → aim for a big pot
| Situation | Reason |
|---|---|
| Stacks 30bb or less | Insufficient implied odds |
| 3-bet pots | Low SPR means bigger losses when you miss |
| Tight opponents | Won't pay you off even when you hit a set |
| Multiway wet boards | Your set might not be the nuts (straights/flushes possible) |
K♠5♥2♣ = dry board, Hero: set of fives
Very few draws available, so the risk of being outdrawn is low
Calling keeps the opponent betting on the turn/river
Raising the flop would fold out hands like KQ or worse → lost value
Board: 8♠7♥6♣ — Hero: 8♦8♥ (top set)
